Is my suspension showing signs of trouble?

To ensure that your vehicle drives smoothly and safely, it's important that you drive with a healthy suspension. A properly functioning suspension will help to keep you safer during an accident by making it more likely that all four wheels stay on the pavement. And during your day-to-day driving, a healthy suspension will improve handling and make your driving experience more enjoyable. At Auto Check Complete Auto Care, our local mechanics are experts at repairing any suspension issues that arise. When you first notice a sign of a suspension problem, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop.

Common Signs of Suspension Trouble

A bad suspension can lead to problems during the braking process. With a faulty suspension, it could feel like your car is nose-diving when the brakes are engaged. Suspension trouble can also make your vehicle take longer to come to a complete stop after you've initiated the braking process. Another sign of suspension failure is that your car bounces excessively when you drive over bumps. If you have a failing spring, you're likely to hear clunking noises when you drive over rough patches of road. A bad spring can also cause your vehicle to sit lower in the affected corner.

There are a few other issues you'll want to watch out for. For one, a bad suspension can cause uneven tire wear, which can then lead to the formation of bald spots on tires. And if it feels like you're drifting when taking corners at safe speeds, then you may be driving with a faulty suspension. Leaky shocks are another indication of suspension failure.

The Bounce Test

You can do a quick test to get a better idea of whether your suspension is in poor condition. To start, make sure your car is safely parked and not liable to roll. Then go to the front end and press down on it hard. Rock it twice and let go. Next, go to the rear end and repeat this step. After releasing, your vehicle should only rock on its own two or three times. But if it rocks more than this, then you'll want to have the mechanic take a look at your suspension.
