How to Tell if Your Alternator is Failing

If your alternator isn't working properly, your battery's power reserve could run dry. Consequently, your car may not start up, or could even die while you're in traffic. To avoid finding yourself in such a stressful situation, you'll want to get to the shop when you first notice a sign of alternator failure. At Auto Check Complete Car Care, our local mechanics are experts at addressing alternator and electrical system problems.

Common Signs of Alternator Trouble

A dead battery could mean that your alternator is faulty. When you install a new battery in your vehicle, it should work reliably for at least three years, if not substantially longer. But if it dies sooner, then you could be dealing with a failing alternator---unless of course you left your headlights on! An illuminated dashboard warning light is another common sign of alternator trouble. This light often reads ALT or GEN or comes on in the shape of a little battery. Anytime you see a dashboard warning light turn on, you'll want to take the necessary steps to figure out what exactly is triggering it.

Electrical accessory problems could mean that your alternator isn't working like it should. Today's vehicles commonly have computers that can figure out which electrical accessories should have their power supply diminished when the alternator isn't working correctly. This saves power for the car's most important electrical needs, but could cause trouble with accessories such as the radio or power seats. A malfunctioning alternator can also cause problems with headlights. If a failing alternator causes headlights to dim or flicker, it can pose a safety hazard, especially at night on roads that aren't well-lit by street lamps. Another way that a bad alternator can create a safety issue is if your car stalls out in traffic because there isn't enough power being sent to spark plugs.
