5 Common Problems of the Check Engine Light

5 Common Problems of the Check Engine LightDoes the check engine light scare you? It shouldn't, unless it has been on for quite some time. This little glowing light is triggered by sensors all over your vehicle that are helping to ensure your car or truck is running at peak performance. That light is there to let you know it's time to visit the shop for what will likely be a quick and inexpensive service. However, if that light has been on for quite some time you may end up needing a bigger repair, as demonstrated by this first check engine light problem.

Bad Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter converts dangerous exhaust fumes from your car into less harmful emissions that are sent out the tailpipe. If a problem arises with this part the check engine light will illuminate and unfortunately this is one of the most expensive repairs you may ever need to do on a vehicle. However catalytic converter failure can generally be attributed to another, less expensive part breaking first, which would have triggered the check engine light beforehand. This is why it is important to head to the auto repair shop right away when the light comes on.

Failed Mass Air Flow Sensor

The MAF sensor detects incoming air and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the gasoline in order to make sure your car runs properly. If it is unable to do so because it has become dirty, corroded or otherwise malfunctions the light will come one. This is important to have repaired as a bad MAF sensor can drop your MPGs by as much as 25 percent!

Bad Ignition Coil

The ignition creates the electrical pathway necessary to get your car's engine started. If sensors detect that the pathway is not allowing the right amount of electrical current to flow through the light will be turned on.

Loose or Broken Gas Cap

When the check engine light comes on the best case scenario is that you didn't tighten the gas cap the last time you filled up. If gas fumes evaporate out of the filler hose because of a loose, cracked or broken gas cap the light will illuminate, which is good for you because your losing gas you didn't even get a chance to use!

Transmission Issues

It should be noted that the check engine light doesn't just reflect engine issues. Some transmission problems can illuminate the light as well. One common issue is if there is low levels of transmission fluid detected.
